Pneumonococcal Vaccination

Pneumococcus is a bacteria which is the most common cause of Pneumonia and a leading cause of meningitis, sinusitis, bronchitis and blood infection (septicaemia).

A vaccine to combat this bug is now given as part of the childhood immunisation programme. Adults, particularly those aged over 65, and those with medical conditions as outlined below are at risk of infection with Pneumococcus and it is really important to get vaccinated.
Adults who receive the vaccine at aged 65 or over will have life long protection from the infection, while those under 65 require a vaccination again after 5 years or once again when reach age 65yrs.

Please ask your doctor or nurse if the vaccine is advisable for you.

Similar to the flu vaccine, it is free for medical card holders and an administration fee of €40 applies for private patients.
